Victoria Horticultural SocietyOur Impact Why We Exist

The Victoria Horticultural Society inspires people by demonstrating what can be grown in the Victoria area, displaying the beauty of gardens, sharing knowledge of how to grow plants and food, and providing calm and healing refuges. Through its activities the society creates a community.

Our Story What We Do

The VHS meets ten times a year for educational workshops and presentations, to show what we have grown, to create access to a library and experts, to sell plants and gardening equipment. It also maintains a website to disseminate information on upcoming events, distributes a newsletter with educational and resource information, and organizes garden tours.

Rhododendron flowerOur Programs How We Do It

The Victoria Horticultural Society (VHS) is a community of new and experienced gardeners who meet once a month to share information and expertise, and display what they have grown.

Each meeting includes both a workshop addressing some aspect of gardening, from soil management to seeding or pruning, and a presentation by a specialist on a variety of topics such as landscaping, habitat restoration, or growing and using edible flowers. There is a large lending library for members, plants and gardening equipment for sale, seasonal flowers and vegetables on display, and Master Gardeners for consultation. There is a raffle of donated plants, and tea and coffee.

During the summer, members open their gardens for viewing and inspiration. Occasionally garden tours are organized.

What You Can Do

Donate to VHS — The VHS has partnered with CanadaHelps to provide you with a way to make a tax deductible donation from the comfort of your computer!

The VHS awards two bursaries each year - one to a student graduating from the Camosun College Horticultural Technician Program, and one to a student graduating from the Pacific Horticultural College at the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific.

Become a member of VHS — As a member of VHS, you’ll have access to plant identifications, plant selection and cultivation tips, as well as general expertise and inspiration from some of the most experienced gardeners in the Victoria area. You’ll be able to attend fascinating lectures on a variety of topics by invited guest speakers at our monthly meetings, not to mention useful workshops and other events that are scheduled throughout the year. One of the best benefits of membership is the Open Gardens program which permits members to view private local gardens the general public does not have the chance to see. VHS members love to “Share what they know and show what they grow” and we’d love to have you join us.
