Power To Be Adventure Therapy Society
Our Impact Why We Exist
Power To Be envisions a community where the power of nature is accessible to everyone. We work with participants to break down barriers that limit their access to the benefits of outdoor recreation, including illness, disability or socioeconomic challenges overcoming these barriers with higher staff ratios, supportive processes and adaptive equipment.
With values of respect, integrity and innovation we practice inclusiveness and appreciation of everyone, build trust through accountability and create opportunities to grow and sustain our impact with excellence.
Our Story What We Do
Power To Be Adventure Therapy began in 1998 with an oncology kayaking trip for children and youth living with cancer. Over the last 16 years Power To Be's outdoor programming has grown to reach more than 7000 participants who are living with a variety of disabilities, illnesses or other barriers. In 2014, Power To Be aims to serve 800 youth and families in need of support.
Power To Be's Adaptive Recreation and Wilderness School activities include hiking, kayaking, climbing, canoeing, snowshoeing, surfing, backpacking and multi-day trips on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Participants are living with a range of barriers including but not limited to children and youth living with autism, an acquired brain injury, developmental barrier, cognitive barrier, mental illness, physical disability, medical illness or youth with socioeconomic barriers. Through a collaborative approach with community agencies, dedicated volunteers and caring staff, Power To Be inspires participants to connect with nature, break down barriers and discover their abilities.
Our Programs How We Do It
Power To Be's delivery model focuses on community collaboration to share resources and expertise to better facilitate award winning programs. The program design is one that achieves lasting and professional relationships with our participants and their families through two comprehensive program streams – Adaptive Recreation and the Wilderness School.
The Adaptive Recreation program offers inclusive adventure-based recreation activities for people living with a barrier or disability. We combine an ability-centered perspective with the benefits of nature, to strengthen people’s connections with themselves, their communities and surroundings.
Our Wilderness School fosters positive social development and life skills through outdoor adventures. Participants experience weekend programs each month and multi-day expeditions each summer. As a multi-year co-ed program starting in grade eight, the Wilderness School is designed for a wide range of youth that could benefit from positive and healthy extra-curricular outdoor programs, which they may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience.
What You Can Do
Donations to the Wilderness School or Adaptive Recreation programs will enable Power To Be to increase the number of youth and families we serve in the Victoria community. Donations also support staffing resources for community outreach, which allows us to manage the many community partnerships that make Power To Be's impact possible.
Power To Be's ability to carry out our mission relies on the philanthropic hearts of individuals, corporations and foundations in the community. With your support we can continue to connect participants with nature, ultimately allowing each of them an opportunity to discover their abilities. Please consider a donation today.
