The Other Guys Theatre Company
Our Impact Why We Exist
The Other Guys Theatre creates musical theatrical productions inspired by local stories.
OGT is dedicated to providing opportunities for established and emerging local theatre artists to collaborate in the creation and development of original, professional musical and theatrical productions.
Our Story What We Do
Since 2001 the Other Guys Theatre (OGT) has produced 8 world premieres and 3 revivals of their original works including Moodyville Tales, Sex: the Musical, The Vinedressers, The Ballad of Jim Pane and Rattenbury. In addition, their most recent production, Good Timber, has toured to 16 BC communities over the past 3 years. Director Ross Desprez and Musical Director Tobin Stokes have supported each other's creations of musicals and chamber operas for the past 12 years.
Accolades and Accomplishments
Rattenbury Concert Performance Premiere
"Composer/librettist Tobin Stokes has crafted a haunting, memorable and compelling new work that left the audience eagerly anticipating a full production."
John Threlfall, CVV Magazine, Victoria
"Those 300-400 people lucky enough to be a part of this first-class workshop experience will be able to say: 'I was there.' For a work-in-progress, Tobin Stokes showed us a draft of a soon-to-be Canadian opera classic."
David Bukach, Monday Magazine, Victoria
Good Timber - Songs and Stories of the Western Logger
"Starting with nothing more than a book of old poetry, the Other Guys Theatre has done a remarkable job of creating an evocative and moving piece of theatre reflecting to the audience stories of who we are and where we’ve come from. This collaboration of actors, musicians, and designers, especially the multi-media archival backdrop and the excellence with which the overall production was accomplished, certainly ranks as an enormous contribution to our art form."
Canada Council Assessment
"Good Timber logs BC history in song...marriage of music, poetry brilliantly performed."
Times Colonist, Victoria
"The last time I saw such a talented group of performers was in New York at the Tony-award winning musical, Once."
Our Programs How We Do It
For the 2013 season of work The Other Guys Theatre is focused on the following three programs:
Commissioning local composers Tobin Stokes and Ross Desprez to write a musical, theatrical piece BC In Song - Creating Legends and facilitating development workshops culminating in public concert performances.
Actively seeking partnerships for the continued development of Rattenbury, the opera based on the life of the famous architect.
Continuing to tour Good Timber to BC communities. By October 2013, Good Timber will have toured to 16 communities, and will have played 156 performances attended by over 28,000 audience members.
