Island Sexual Health Society

Island Sexual Health services Vancouver Island area by providing clinical services, community education and information about sexual health.

Our Impact Why We Exist

"You are the best clinic that I have ever visited. I don't have a family doctor so I have used many different clinics (for lots of issues not just sexual health) and Island Sexual Health is by far the best of any. Your doctors, nurses, and staff are always courteous, kind, warm, welcoming and knowledgeable. You make sexual health care comfortable with your non judgmental and caring approach. If other clinics treated their patients the way you do, people would be healthier!

I first learned of your organization several years ago when one of your educators (who was also amazing!) came in to a class I was in talk about sexual health. I have been coming to the clinic ever since then and feel as if I am taking better care of myself because of you! I have recruited many of my friends to also use your clinic and their experiences have also always been positive. Please don't ever close — I don't know what people in Victoria would ever do!"

Our Programs How We Do It

The Breaking Down Barriers project was developed to provide opportunities to young parents who experience barriers (social, economic, financial, cultural) to traditional sources of sexual health information and education. This project supports young parents (especially mothers) in the provision of comprehensive sexual health information. Through the provision of comprehensive sexual health information, this project provides the opportunity for participants to receive the sexual health information and connections to a community resource that she or he needs in order to make positive and healthy choices about their sexual health.

Participants are encouraged and supported to participate within their own comfort and safety. Topics covered include healthy relationships, communication skills, contraception, safer sex, and how to speak with children about sexuality. Participants are given a workbook, sexual health care supplies, and other resources.

The program has proven to be a well respected and highly sought after program. Feedback has been consistently positive about the value of the project from participants and agencies and the clinical side of agency sees participants accessing sexual health care as a result. As with many programs, the demand often exceeds the resources needed for the programming such as printed materials and other support supplies. Funds raised for this program development and circulation of educational materials including books that parents can use with their children to teach them about bodies, boundaries, health and safety.
