Family Services of Greater Victoria (formerly BC Families in Transition)

Helping children, youth and adults address changes and challenges in family relationships.

Family Services of Greater Victoria logoOur Impact Why We Exist

Family Services of Greater Victoria exists to provide high quality family support services to everyone in the Greater Victoria Region without regard for their ability to pay. We provide professional counseling services, group programs and family legal information (separation, divorce, child custody).

Family Services of Greater Victoria provides 250 hours of group program, over 2,000 hours of individual, family and couples counseling as well as legal information to 5,000 individuals a year. We work closely with other community agencies to provide people who contact us with services they need.

Increasingly we provide counselling services to children and youth struggling not only with their parent’s relationship breakdown but also with behavioural problems, anxiety and depression.

Last year with the help of the Victoria Foundation we were able to expand our services to include professional mediation in separation and divorce.

Our staff counselors, advocates and facilitators are registered professional counsellors, educators and social workers.

Family Services of greater Victoria is a Member of Family Services Canada.

Our Story What We Do

We opened in 1978 as Divorce Lifeline. The needs of our community compelled us to continuously expand our repertoire of services over the last 34 years. Over the years the demand for services has grown to the point where half of our counseling is provided people not currently facing a crisis over relationship breakdown. We changed our name to Family Services of Greater Victoria in 2015 to better reflect what we actually provide for families in the region. Not only do we have 34 years of experience in helping all members of the family through divorce and separation, we have also provided group programs for blended families for 10 years as well as individuals and couples counseling for partners experiencing relationship challenges for more than 20 years. In the last year we have added on parenting support and relationship coaching to better service the Greater Victoria Community. The demand for counseling for children is a service area that has also expanded dramatically over the last three years. Nearly three quarters of our counseling clients are now children and youth.

We are proud of our capacity to identify and meet community needs and very grateful for the assistance that the Victoria Foundation has provided developing new programs and helping to sustain our ongoing services.
