Our Impact Why We Exist
What is Dance Victoria?
Dance Victoria is best known to the public for its Dance at the Royal series, a season of five mid- to large-scale dance productions at the Royal Theatre. The series includes a wide spectrum of dance from ballet to contemporary, from across Canada and around the world.
From its 12,000 square foot venue, replete with three dance studios, galleries and offices, Dance Victoria Studios offers a range of programs that include professional development for Victoria's dance artists, extended creative residencies for local and visiting dance companies and Rough Cuts, an occasional series that invites the pubic into the studio to see new works in progress.
Annually, Dance Victoria awards one of Canada's richest dance prizes, the Chrystal Dance Prize designed to support young dancers who are completing their training abroad or mid-career artists working with an artists for outside Canada. To qualify, the applicant artist must be a resident of western Canada (MB, SK, AB, BC, YT). In 2015, Dance Victoria will award a total of $27,000.
Dance Victoria also works with the local community to offer Dance Days each January. Dance Days features a wide variety of free dance classes for adults at studios all over town. No experience necessary!
Dance Victoria Studios is also home to the South Vancouver Island Dance Archives, a growing collection of photos, press clippings, performance programs and other memorabilia from the past 100 years, preserved and catalogued for all time. The Archives committee meets weekly and is always open to welcoming new members or materials.
Our Story What We Do
Dance Victoria is dedicated to dance across many platforms. It supports the development of new works in its studios. It invites the public to see these works and meet the artists at informal showings called Rough Cuts. Each year it produces Dance Days, a ten-day celebration of all things dance in venues throughout the region. It commissions new works that tour the world. It awards the annual Chrystal Dance Prize, one of the richest in Canada. It curates and markets its annual Dance at the Royal series that has featured companies like Ballet Nacional de Cuba, the National Ballet of Canada, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, New Zealand's Black Grace and many more.
