Via Choralis Performance Society
Our Impact Why We Exist
Via Choralis is a community chamber choir with a passion for singing, located on the Saanich Peninsula. From September to April each year we rehearse and perform a broad repertoire ranging from medieval to contemporary, including major works with orchestra.
We serve the community by providing a place for people to come together and sing for enjoyment, by performing public concerts, and by providing opportunities for youth.
Our Story What We Do
Via Choralis was founded in 1999 by Elizabeth Shannon and, since 2005, has been directed by Nicholas Fairbank. Programming is eclectic. The choir performs a wide repertoire ranging from Renaissance madrigals and choral classics to contemporary Canadian repertoire. Besides our own concerts, Via Choralis has also enjoyed working with other choirs and performing groups in the Capital Region.
Our Programs How We Do It
Via Choralis is a mixed-voice auditioned community chamber choir based on the Saanich Peninsula, just north of Victoria, BC. Typically we prepare and perform 3 programmes each year, one of which is a major work with orchestra. Once or twice a year we also share the stage with other choirs or instrumental soloists.
What You Can Do
We are always looking for new singing members in all voice categories. Currently we are particularly short of Basses and Tenors. Prospective singers should have some previous choral experience and basic sight-singing skills. Auditions, which are short and handled in a gentle, non-threatening way, are necessary to assess skill level and vocal range for section placement. Auditions are usually held between early May and late August. While there is an annual fee for singing members, it is waived for those aged 30 and under.
We also welcome those interested to join our Board of Directors. Meetings are held monthly, and we are particularly seeking people with promotional skills.
