Artemis Place Society
Our Impact Why We Exist
Young Women experience educational success, find their voice, fulfill their potential and have the power to achieve their dreams.
- To provide social and emotional support and high school education to young women in our holistic and nurturing community.
- To provide a nurturing early childhood experience to the infants and toddlers of our young moms while modelling care-giving skills and supporting each mom in her parenting.
Our Story What We Do
For over forty years, Artemis Place Society has successfully supported some of the most vulnerable young women in our community as they work on their high school education and develop as strong and successful members of society.
In 1971 Artemis started its first program in response to a concern over the lack of resources for young women who had left school or who were experiencing difficulty with the traditional school system. School District 61 joined with the Society to operate the Girls’ Alternative Program (GAP) in 1972 and this partnership continued successfully until 2014 when the School District withdrew its resources. Since 1971, Artemis continued to expand the programming and created additional programs to meet the educational and social needs of young women, including:
- On-site child care centre established in 1989 (now called Artemis Young Parent Program) for the infants and toddlers of the mothers attending the school; and,
- Artemis Place Secondary, an Independent School, certified through the Independent School Branch of the Ministry of Education.
Since the Fall of 2014, Artemis Place Society has operated the Artemis Place Secondary School and the Artemis Young Parent Program from one location, at 3020 Richmond Rd., where the Girls Alternative Program was previously run. However, as the Society is now leasing the building from School District 61, the Society is looking for a facility that will ensure our long-term sustainability through lower cost or buying.
Since the beginning, Artemis has always designed programs to revolve around each young woman’s active participation and involvement in every area of her education. As well as help with self-paced course work, students are given counselling, mentorship and life skills in an atmosphere of safety and respect.

What You Can Do
Artemis Place Society is constantly fundraising from year to year in order to balance our budget and deliver the enriched and high quality programming that the Society has become known for. If you are interested in donating to Artemis Place, donations are always welcome. If you are interseted in donating, or fundraising for a Capital Campaign for a new facility or a 3-5 year daycare, please contact the Executive Director, Rachel Calder at email@example.com.
Artemis is always happy to receive prepared food donations to feed our students. Items such as soups and muffins are a huge hit.
As Artemis is newly responsible for the grounds of the facility, there is also plenty of opportunity to provide gardening help!
Artemis Place is also a charity listed on http://www.usedvictoria.com/UsedHelps where you can sell your treasures online and receive a charitable tax receipt for your donation to Artemis Place Society.
Please contact Artemis if you have any other ideas or would like to get involved in another way.
