Art Gallery of Greater Victoria logoOur Impact Why We Exist

Everyday, The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria touches the lives of people of all ages, origins and incomes — through exhibitions, education, community outreach, online resources, art programs and mentorship. Best of all, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria brings people together to share the love of art and the joy of community.

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is the second largest public gallery in British Columbia. We are proud to house BC’s most extensive art collection in scope and size. The AGGV features over 18,000 visual art works and draws more than 100,000 visitors a year, as well as reaching more than 250,000 citizens through outreach programs.

Our Story What We Do

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria fills a fundamental role in our community — it contributes to its health, reflects its values and is a demonstration of its significance. As an essential part of life in our community, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria does more than just present great exhibitions. The Gallery builds audiences who see the institution as a place that is relevant to their lives. The AGGV is a trusted cultural organization that presents significant exhibitions and events and is a reflection of how the community sees its place in the world.

As a necessary and vital cultural institution and meeting place for all people, the AGGV interprets and preserves art through the collection, conservation, exhibition, research and education of visual art.

Our Programs How We Do It

Here are just a few ways the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria brings art to life in our community:

We offer a variety of ongoing programs to enhance the visitor experience and expand on exhibit themes: regularly scheduled lectures, film screenings, artist talks, demonstrations, and tours of current exhibitions are a few. In partnership with the We Rage We Weep Foundation, we provide an Art and Alzheimer’s program, pairing an art exhibition experience and a hands-on art activity for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers.

Children, youth, and families are engaged with the Gallery through a variety of on-site and off-site programming. Our Family Sundays introduce the Gallery and Art to families in an entertaining, inclusive atmosphere. Participants get up to their elbows in fun art projects and educational activities that are inspired by current exhibits at the gallery.

Children have a wide range of opportunities to have access to the gallery and to be introduced to a world of art. Our studio classes are open to children ages 2-12, docent-led school tours are available for all grade levels, as well as our popular Gallery in the Schools program, that shares pieces from the Gallery’s collection with over 10,000 Victoria area elementary school students in their classrooms each year. The New Extreme program gives Victoria’s young artists mentorship opportunities with established artists, while the Open Door Access to Art program gives high school artists access to the Gallery’s staff and exhibitions, inspiring and informing their creative output.

The Gallery values its accessibility. Admission is by donation on the first Tuesday of each month. Additionally, the Gallery has partnered with the Greater Victoria Public Library to provide a number of complimentary family/household admission passes available for loan with a library card.

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is proud of our vast array of high quality programs.

What You Can Do

The Art Gallery of Victoria is a public Art Gallery. Not being privately owned or solely government funded, we rely on the generosity of our community to support our efforts to bring art to life. As Victoria grows, demand for our programs also grows. Our calling, as stewards of the amazing collection we hold in public trust, is to care for and maintain the collection, making it accessible for the enjoyment of our citizens for generations to come. Your gift, no matter the size, makes a difference to the Gallery and to our community. Thank you for your support. We couldn’t do it without you.
